Senior Engineering Manager
Senior Engineering Manager
uShip is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to lead critical engineering teams across our marketplace platform. This role owns the delivery, technical quality, operational health, and talent development of multiple engineering teams in a medium-sized product/platform area.
You will oversee a large portion of the SDLC, collaborating closely with product, design, architecture, and data architecture. You will report to the VP of Engineering, Product and Design. As an engineering manager, you are responsible for crisp roadmap execution, health of the technology platform, and the hiring, growth, and retention of engineering talent.
Your focus is mentoring and coaching teams, ensuring alignment with the product org, and maintaining excellent communication with stakeholders. Beyond people and product delivery, you will play a key role in transforming and modernizing our platform, championing product innovation, and guiding greenfield development to help the company grow and scale the next generation of uShip.
Responsibilities
- Lead 2+ engineering teams or one medium engineering area, setting direction across delivery, technical execution, team health, and operational excellence.
- Partner with Product, Design, Data, Security, IT, and business stakeholders to shape 6–12 month plans that balance customer impact, business priorities, reliability, security, and performance.
- Actively champion product innovation and guide greenfield development work, enabling teams to build new capabilities.
- Set a high technical bar without being the primary implementer. Review major designs, ask strong tradeoff questions, and ensure teams make sound decisions around scalability, simplicity, maintainability, security, observability, and cost.
- Develop engineering leaders and managers to decentralize decision-making, ensuring teams are empowered to consistently make high-quality technical and product choices.
- Drive predictable execution across teams by clarifying ownership, milestones, dependencies, risks, and decision points.
- Improve engineering practices across code review, testing, CI/CD, documentation, production readiness, incident response, and post-incident follow-through.
- Build healthy, high-accountability teams through hiring, coaching, performance management, retention, and clear expectations.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including strong exposure to architecture, system design, reliability, security, and production operations.
- 5+ years managing engineering teams, managers, senior engineers, or technical leads.
- Experience leading multiple teams or a medium-sized engineering area through complex product, platform, infrastructure, or modernization work.
- Experience implementing and scaling responsible AI Tool usage throughout the Software Development Life Cycle.
- Strong technical judgment across distributed systems, APIs, cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, testing, observability, incident management, and secure software delivery.
- Proven ability to partner with Product and Design to shape roadmaps, manage scope, and connect engineering work to customer and business outcomes.
- Experience hiring, coaching, developing, and performance-managing engineering talent.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical tradeoffs to technical and non-technical audiences.
Ideal Qualifications
- Experience with AWS, Terraform or Infrastructure as Code, GitHub Actions, containerized workloads, Kubernetes/EKS/ECS, serverless architectures, and observability platforms and standards such as CloudWatch, Datadog, Open Telemetry, or Prometheus.
- Experience leading rearchitecture, cloud migration, front-end modernization, or platform consolidation work.
- Familiarity with marketplace, logistics, payments, identity, e-commerce, or other operationally complex product domains.
- Experience with third-party integrations or platforms such as Stripe, Okta, Cloudflare, MongoDB, Project44, or similar technologies.
- Experience improving engineering operating models, including planning cadence, delivery metrics, SLOs, incident response, quality gates, and production-readiness standards.
- Track record of developing managers, Staff+ engineers, and technical leaders into broader-scope roles.
- Experience balancing product delivery, technical debt, reliability, security, cost, and team health across a 6–12 month horizon.
